VLOG #4

LYRICS

Rolling down Pacific Coast Highway
Hoping that you roll my way
Swerving round turn sideways
And we driving round in your driveway
Engine off and we silent
I’m checking on my mileage
And from the look on your eyelids
I’m thinking that I might slide in

 One night, moon above
Shining bright so luminous
All I see the two of us
No time to get down I’m moving up
 One night, moon above
Shining bright so luminous
All I see the two of us
No time to get down I’m moving up

So be the one downtown when I get it
So be the one in my sites when I’m feeling love
So be the one downtown when I get it

Rolling down Pacific Coast Highway
Hoping that you roll my way
Swerving round turn sideways
And we driving round in your driveway
Engine off and we silent
I’m checking on my mileage
And from the look on your eyelids
I’m thinking that I might slide in

You’ll be the one downtown when I get it
You’ll be the one in my sites when I’m feeling love
You’ll be the one downtown when I get it
So be the one downtown when I get it
You’ll be the one in my sites when I’m feeling love
Be the one downtown when I get it

STORY

Downtown is another song that went through many variations, from a funk version, to a dreamy R&B version until I final settled on this final cut that is a nod to jazz and the modern R&B style of bands like The Internet.

Downtown is a song that encapsulates the honeymoon stage of a new relationship. I had just started dating a girl and was fresh out of college living in Los Angeles. I was excited about chasing my music dreams in a giant music metropolis and was with someone who had creative dreams of her own.

Even though we practiced different mediums of art, there was a sense of wanting to reach our own ideas of success together. That was something very enticing to me as I had never dated an artist before. Plus it was summer time so not much could beat driving down the PCH and enjoying the warm evenings, which inspired the easy-to-cruise-to nature of this song.

As we all know, this initial excitement wears off, but Downtown is frozen in time as a moment of early-stage relationship bliss and a sort of naivety of dreaming up something huge and wanting to “get it” (as repeated throughout the song) to share with a person you love.

PERFORMANCE VIDEOS

This is another tune that took me quite a long time to finalize, I tried six or seven different grooves, including this early 2000’s R&B style version I performed live in Hollywood.

Music With Friends

I promised lots of surprise goodies along this experience and since today is the final day, I wanted to share a cover song I made with my good friend and killer singer-songwriter Sunny. We’ve had the opportunity to share the stage together in San Francisco and Los Angeles, but this was our first time jumping in the studio together for a live cover of Chris Brown’s song Yo (Excuse Me Miss).

I have to give a shout-out to the man holding down the rap in our cover of Sam Smith’s “I’'m Not the Only One” below. Luis Chavez aka Lucha Media is a melodic wizard, lyrical genius and my most long-term music collaborator. Luis helped me polish up the final lyrics and melodies for both New Perspective and Downtown. You can hear one of his original verses in our cover video below. If it wasn’t obvious by the setting of the video,we met each other in our college fraternity.

Luis and I also formed a group called HIPO to make some club-ready dance music along with our pal Fer. We’ve released one track so far but have some more already finished, we’re just waiting for the right time to release. For now, please enjoy our debut track “Let’s Go.”

I used to work in Venice, CA at a tech company that happened to have plenty of musicians there. I met my former drummer there, a hip-hop head and bass player, and the jazz musician and songwriter behind the track below. Oded Noy is a highly skilled jazz organist and trombone player and saw me singing at the company’s open mic. This led to a couple collaborations between us. Below is my favorite track we did together, it’s called “Glad to be Around.”
